Kid Friendly Vegetarian Corn Dogs!
Every June we attend Camp Meeting in Wisconsin. We spend 9 days camping (well, glamping) on a huge camp ground filled with families who are there for spiritual rejuvenation! We attend meetings about health, family, parenting, and spirituality. The kids attend meetings with music, crafts, and stories! And throughout the week we go swimming, lay in a hammock, visit with friends and family, and enjoy the sunshine in the great outdoors!
In the center of the camp ground is a store and snack shop. The snack shop is known for their delicious deep-fried corn dogs. We look forward to getting one every year! For the rest of the year, we can just make our own Homemade Vegetarian Corn Dogs!
Why this Recipe Works
Honey & Sugar Balance the Savory Flavors – A touch of sweetness mimics the classic fairground Corn Dog tastes and compliments the vegetarian hot dogs beautifully.
The Thick Batter Clings Well to the Hot Dogs – This ensures an even coating that fries up crispy and golden instead of sliding off during cooking.
Deep Frying Creates the Ultimate Crispy Exterior – The hot oil quickly seals the batter, producing a crunchy outside while keeping the inside soft and fluffy.
Perfect for Parties, Game Days, and Family Dinners – The handheld design makes these Corn Dogs fun to eat, kid friendly, and ideal for sharing!

Ingredients You’ll Need
2 quarts Vegetable Oil – Used for deep frying the corn dogs until golden brown and crispy.
3/4 cup Yellow Cornmeal – Provides the classic corn dog flavor and slightly grainy texture.
3/4 cup Flour – Helps create structure and stability in the batter.
1 tbsp Sugar – Adds a touch of sweetness to balance the savory flavors.
1/4 tsp Salt – Enhances the overall flavor of the batter.
1 1/2 tsp Baking Powder – Gives the coating a light, fluffy texture as it cooks.
1 Egg – Acts as a binder, helping the batter hold together.
2 tbsp Honey – Adds subtle sweetness and helps create a golden crust.
3/4 cup Buttermilk – Adds moisture, tenderness, and a slight tang to the batter.
2 tsp Oil – Mixed into the batter to improve texture and richness.
8 Vegetarian Hot Dogs – The meat-free centerpiece of this recipe, providing a savory filling.
8 Skewers – Used to hold the vegetarian hot dogs, making them easy to dip and fry.

How to Make Homemade Vegetarian Corn Dogs
In a large pot, heat 2 quarts of vegetable oil to 350 degrees.
In a large bowl, whisk together 3/4 cup yellow cornmeal, 3/4 cup flour, 1 tbsp sugar, 1/4 tsp salt, and 1 1/2 tsp baking powder.
Stir in 1 egg, 2 tbsp honey, 3/4 cup buttermilk, and 2 tsp vegetable oil. Let mixture sit for 10 minutes to thicken.
Meanwhile this allows the oil to heat up to temperature. Remove hot dogs from packaging and place skewers through the center of the hot dog.
Pour batter into a tall drinking glass. Dunk each skewered hot dog into the cornmeal, let access drip off, then place into the hot oil.
Turn the corn dogs frequently with tongs to brown evenly. Cook for about 2-3 minutes.
Remove with tongs and transfer to a paper towel lined plate. Repeat with remaining hot dogs.
Pat the Hot Dogs Dry – Moisture can prevent the batter from sticking. Use paper towels to dry them before skewering and dipping.
Use a Tall Glass for Dipping – Pour the batter into a tall drinking glass. This makes it much easier to coat the hot dogs evenly from top to bottom.
Fry in Small Batches – Avoid overcrowding the pot. Frying a few Corn Dogs at a time helps maintain consistent oil temperature and ensures even cooking.
Turn While Frying – Gently rotate the Corn Dogs as they cook to achieve an evenly golden brown crust on all sides.
Serve Immediately – Corn Dogs taste best fresh from the fryer when the coating is crispy and the inside is warm and flavorful.
