This Homemade Stovetop Applesauce is the kind of cozy Fall recipe that fills your kitchen with the smell of warm apples and cinnamon! With just a handful of simple ingredients – fresh apples, apple juice, brown sugar, cinnamon, and a splash of lemon – it cooks down into a soft, comforting sauce that’s perfect for snacking, baking, or spooning warm straight from the pot!
Why this Recipe Works
A Big Batch of Apples Means Big Flavor – Using 6 lbs of peeled, cored apples gives the sauce a naturally rich, full apple flavor. The apples break down into a soft, mashable texture that’s perfect for both chunky and smooth applesauce.
Apple Juice Boosts Sweetness Without Extra Sugar – Instead of relying only on brown sugar, the apple juice adds natural sweetness and enhances the apple flavor.
Brown Sugar Adds Warm, Caramel Depth – A half cup of brown sugar melts into the apples, giving the sauce a cozy Fall sweetness and a deeper golden color.
Stovetop Simmering Creates Perfect Texture – Cooking low and slow lets the apples break down naturally, giving you full control – mash for chunky applesauce or blend for silky smooth.

Ingredients You’ll Need
6 lbs Apples (Peeled, Cored & Cut Into 8 Slices) – The heart of the recipe – using a full mix of peeled, cored apples gives you a soft, mashable texture and rich apple flavor. Six pounds ensures a big, cozy batch perfect for Fall!
1 cup Apple Juice – Adds natural sweetness and helps the apple soften as they cook. It also boosts the apple flavor without adding extra sugar.
1 tsp Lemon Juice – Brightens the flavor and keeps the applesauce from turning too dark. Just a splash balances the sweetness beautifully.
1/2 cup Brown Sugar – Adds warm, caramel like sweetness that deepens the flavor. Brown sugar melts into the apples and gives the sauce a richer color.
1 tsp Cinnamon – Brings classic Fall warmth and cozy spice. Just enough to enhance the apples without overpowering them.

How to Make Homemade Stovetop Applesauce
Combine 6 lbs of apples (peeled, cored, and cut into 8 slices), 1 cup apple juice, 1 tsp lemon juice, 1/2 cup brown sugar, and 1 tsp cinnamon into a large pot and cook over medium heat for 30 minutes. Stir occasionally.
Carefully puree the apples in a food processor until smooth. Note: Don’t fill the processor too full, it’s best to divide apples in half or thirds to puree.
Pour into a large bowl and stir. Taste the applesauce and if needed add a spoonful of sugar and a dash of cinnamon and mix again. Repeat until you are happy with the taste of the applesauce!
Measuring the Apples – 6 lbs of apples is 1/2 peck. Or, 6 lbs of apples is 18-24 medium size apples. And, if using large apples, 6 lbs is about 12-15.
Stir Occasionally – This prevents sticking and helps the apples cook evenly.
Taste and Adjust Sweetness – Apples vary – add more brown sugar only if needed.
Cool Completely Before Storing – This helps the applesauce thicken and keeps condensation out of your jars.
