Sweet Potato Pie Recipe

I’m pretty sure this will be an unpopular opinion, but I like Sweet Potato Pie better than Pumpkin Pie ! They are very similar, so much that I think someone could be easily fooled that one is the other. But there is a natural sweetness, a warmth from the spices, and an earthy flavor that really stands out to me in this pie.

I should probably include that I absolutely love sweet potatoes, too!

What You’ll Need for the Crust

1 1/4 cup Flour

1/2 cup Butter Flavored Crisco

1/2 tsp Salt

3 tbsp Cold Water

And the Sweet Potato Filling

1 lb Sweet Potatoes, Peeled & Boiled

1/2 cup Sugar

1/2 tsp Cinnamon

1/4 tsp All Spice

1/4 tsp Nutmeg

1/8 tsp Salt

1 cup Buttermilk

3 Eggs, Slightly Beaten

How to Make a Sweet Potato Pie

Make the pie crust by combining 1 1/4 cup flour, 1/2 cup butter flavored Crisco, and 1/2 tsp salt.

Gently stir in 3 tbsp cold water. (If too dry, add water gradually a teaspoon at a time.)

Lightly sprinkle countertop with flour and roll out the pie crust. Place into pie pan and gently form to the shape of the pan.

Using a knife, cut off extra around the edge of the pan.

Preheat oven to 375 degrees.

After the sweet potato pie mixture is poured into the crust, you can leave the edge of the crust as is or press a fork or your fingertip into the edge to give it a finishing touch.

Peel 1 lb (2 large) sweet potatoes and boil until a fork inserted into them comes out easily. Transfer to a blender and mash until smooth.

Place in a large bowl and add 1/2 cup sugar, 1/2 tsp cinnamon, 1/4 tsp all spice, 1/4 tsp nutmeg, 1/8 tsp salt, 1 cup buttermilk, and 3 slightly beaten eggs. Whisk until well combined.

Pour into prepared crust.

Bake for 15 minutes. Turn heat down to 350 degrees and bake for 30-45 minutes. A knife inserted into the center should come out clean.
